Ideas to enhance Layer Definition Query functionality:
  • Definition Query History – preserve last used queries (layer/document).
  • Multiple Definition Queries (sub-tabs) – stack to choose from in the work process.
  • Definition Query Title – name and describe each query for better orientation.
  • Import Definition Query from other layer or document (like Symbology).
  • Preview Definition Query – interactive preview before application.
Include storing queries like Bookmarks & My Places
Add to this listing, if definition query is applied the auto select button to force selection of data automatically when query is altered.
  • Invert Definition Query checkbox – to quickly reverse query expression impact.
I agree with this, but with additional enhancements.
rather than Selection --> Create layer from selected features, you should be able to create a definition query from selected features... also you should be able to do Selection --> add to existing definition query --> and choose from your list of multiple definition queries. Also if a complex, selection based query exists, you should be able to modify it with a further query... so a selection-based query would say {SELECTION AND "ROADTYPE" = 'PAVED'}. These selections could be previewed, or re-selected. In essence you could use definition queries as saved selections, if you don't actually apply any definition queries.
