Bring ArcMap metadata (title, authors, tags) to Explorer

Windows Explorer and Search (indexing service) extract metadata ("file contents", e.g. title, authors, tags) using an "ifilter", a small extension provided by a third party for a specific file type. ArcMap and ArcGlobe enable users to assign such metadata through File | Map Document Properties dialog, but it is not visible outside ArcGIS due to the missing ifilter. I propose ESRI to implement and distribute (as an independent add-on, for starters) such filter so that users could easily find their content.

Hi @LauriSuoranta,

ArcGIS Desktop is in mature support and will be retired March 1, 2026 so we won’t be considering this idea. We recommend that you migrate to ArcGIS Pro, our fully supported desktop GIS application.

Thank you for taking the time to share your ideas. We truly appreciate your contributions to continuously improving the software to help you do your work and look forward to what ideas you have for ArcGIS Pro.
