ArcGIS Pro currently has a default map scale format as a representative fraction (1:1200) but allows users to display map scales in engineering scale format (for example, 1" = 100') on an individual map basis. However, there is no application-wide setting that allows users to define Engineering Scale as the default format for all newly created maps.

Therefore, users who work primarily in engineering, surveying, transportation, land development, utilities, and other infrastructure disciplines must manually change the scale format for every new map they create.

Requested Enhancement

Add an application-level option within ArcGIS Pro that allows users to specify the default scale display format for all newly created maps.

Example location:

Project → Options → Maps and Scenes

Default Scale Format:

  • Representative Fraction (1:1200)
  • Engineering Scale (1" = 100')
  • Architectural Scale (1/8" = 1'-0")
  • Etc.

When a user creates a new map, inserts a map into a layout, or creates a project from a template, the map would automatically use the selected default scale format.

Benefits

  • Saves time for users who work with engineering scales (or other scales) consistently
  • Creates consistency across projects and maps within an organization.
  • Reduces repetitive setup tasks.
  • Aligns ArcGIS Pro with common engineering and surveying workflows.
  • Improves the experience for organizations migrating from CAD environments where engineering scales are the standard display format.

Because ArcGIS Pro already supports Engineering Scale display at the map level, this enhancement would primarily provide a mechanism for defining a global default preference rather than requiring users to repeatedly configure each new map.
