I know that I've seen it somewhere else, but I'm not seeing it in the the Select By Location tool or the Spatial Join Tool.

For the Relationship in the Select by Location Tool and Match Option for Spatial Join, I would like to see something that makes sure that the center of the feature is within the boundary of said feature. Right now there is no good way to accurately select all of the features that are within, but also cross the boundary of the Selecting Features.

For example, This is the result of "Have their center in" where you can see a feature selected that isn't in the Selecting Features where the red arrows are pointing to features that should have been selected.

And this is what happens when I use Within

If I understand your idea correctly, you can accomplish this with a two-step process:

  • First, using the Feature to Point tool, check the "Inside" option to make sure that the resulting points are not the centroid of the polygon but are within the polygon.
  • Second use the newly exported point features to complete your select by location.

I agree with you that having another "Have their center in" option where the center is inside each polygon, even when the centroid is outside the polygon would be ideal and would make this a one step process!  Maybe it could be called "Have their center in (inside)"

I agreed. It can be accomplished in two steps, but it would be easier with one. And they have already figured out how to make sure it's inside.
