Hi-

It appears I'm missing something re: using a ArcGIS Server print service for web map printing.  I expected that after entering the URL for my ArcGIS Server print service (the one included with Server 10.1) the Print button on the ArcGIS Online web map would allow printing in various layouts and page sizes, but it behaves the same as the default.

Any help?  Thanks a lot.

Hi Matthew,

There is an existing NIM logged for this issue:

[NIM089210   Provide an option for the ArcGIS.com Map Viewer to use another print  layout  option other than MAP_ONLY. ]

At this time, if you want to use the print service, you will need to download an ArcGIS.com template to create a web application and deploy the application to your own web server

More information can be found at the link below:

Has this Print utility issue been resolved with the map viewer?  It appears printing from a web app utilizes the Print service just fine but printing from the map viewer only brings up the ESRI default.  Will this be addressed soon?

Thanks, Phoebe.  That makes sense.  It's really not clear from the help topics, though.

Hi,

I'm still a little unclear as to what adding your own print service under the Utility Services actually does. The Help says "As an administrator of your organization, you can configure the website to use a custom print service", but where will this print service be available to the users, if it's not available on web maps?

I tried adding our custom print service here, but I received the error "The print service URL you have entered is invalid or inaccessible." Does it need to be a 10.1 service?

Thanks!

I'm also unclear how this feature is intended to be used.  I was able to successfully specify a custom print service in "Utility Services" settings but never saw a change in the AGOL print button.

Did you find a solution for setting the print service in ArcGIS Online. I continue to receive an error saying that "The print service URL you have entered is invalid or inaccessible." The print service is accessible, but AGOL continues to give an error.

Sorry Brian but we never found a solution. At that time we were exploring ArcGIS Online and I was curious about that feature. Since then we have completed projects that use Print Services from our ArcGIS servers but the clients have all been applications that we developed.

Hi Brian,

Can you share your print service URL? Is it internal or external? What browser are you using to input the print URL.

The error message indicates that ArcGIS Online couldn't access the URL, or the URL was not identified as a printing service. Is SSL Only enabled on your organization or Server?

Feel free to reply to these questions, or contact Esri Technical Support as they can help to discover what the specific issue is.

Kelly, I found out that my issue was related to me setting my print service up to run asynchronously. Once I set it to run synchronously it worked as expected.  Thanks for replying!
