I am using map viewer and generally have not had an issue. I and several colleagues have successfully uploaded and managed data layers. I am now trying to upload a data layer and am getting the message "This file type is not supported."
A colleague, using MapViewer through a different institution, was able to upload the data layers to a different map without a problem. And I can read them into QGIS without a problem.
The file I am trying to upload is a zip file. It includes the following file types: jpg, dbf, prj, sbn, sbx, she, xml, shx.
Any suggestions about why this might not be working and what I need to do in order to upload these files much appreciated.

In those filetypes you've listed, only .XML and .JPG actually are supported by ArcGIS Online for upload. What you may be looking for is a .shp for shapefile. I would unpack the ZIP and attempt to upload each of the files to see if it will upload correctly for one of them. This is what I normally see inside of my zip files here:
