Updating Data

We have a ArcGIS Online map completely created and formatted to look like we want it.  If the original data has been updated in ArcMap do we need to completely re-format the pop up boxes and the appearance, or is there a way to update the layer without simply creating a new layer?

If you've directly uploaded a shapefile, CSV or other data directly into the map, then is no way to update the layer. You will need to remove the layer from the map, then add the new one.

The workflow we will support in the future is to allow you to make a hosted map service out of your data as part of a subscription to ArcGIS Online. In this case, the data will not reside in the map but will be referenced by the map. Thus, if the data changes, it will be reflected in the map.

Thanks,

Mike

I am new to ArcGIS and I am not quite following the solution.  We have our data setup in ArcGIS Desktop.  From here we zipped the shape files and uploaded them to arcgis.com which imported them wonderfully.  Then I customized the pop-up.

How do I update the data in the shape file based on updated data from ArcGIS Desktop without deleting and adding a new layer which would thus require redoing the customized pop-up settings?

The types of updates would be
- delete a tree
- update the height of a particular tree
- add a new tree

Can you point me to a document which describes in detail how to accomplish what you describe - "make a hosted map service out of your data"

Thanks

Here's some documentation on hosted content.  If you have 10.1 and an ArcGIS.com subscription, you can create a feature service from your shapefile data, and then bring that feature service into ArcMap 10.1 and edit it.  This will sync the changes to your layer on ArcGIS.com.

It's great for updating data, but what I am wondering is:

when I add the feature service from ArcGIS.com to ArcMap 10.1, it'll be saved as a MXD after edited and saved. Will it update synchronnously the feature service to ArcGIS Online after some changes, ie. atrribute, symbology,  scale range or feature editing?

Thanks.

No, there is no automated synchronization. You need to republish the data and recreate the service.

One thing you'll need to think about is where will the "authoritative" data reside? If you're creating a hosted feature service to support editing and also allowing editing against your local database, it will be challenging to synchronize the versions. We don't currently have the set of tools available in the hosted environment. This workflow is currently supported by an onsite ArcGIS server installation synchronizing with the local database. Services are then published out against the same local database.

Thanks,

Mike

This is some good information.  is similar to the height of the trees issue.  in my case the location of the trees are brought in from a gpx file.  We want to then add data to those points throughout the year so the popups would reflect the new heights and show the old ones.  we are getting the information in a csv file right now.  is this possible?  we only have arcgis online.

I have a related but different question:  I have updated a .csv file on ArcGIS Online, but the updates have not happened in the related feature service.  I downloaded the data from ArcGIS Online, and the updated information is indeed on there.  Does your reply mean that every time I update the data, I need to delete the old feature service and create a new one, recreate the metadata, and then go in to each applicable map to add and style content?  It would be terrific if that weren't the case.  It seems as if there are options for editing the feature service, which have been enabled.  What's the best procedure here?

Thanks,
Matt
