Publishing a feature service when signed into ArcGIS online using a personal account

I am trying to publish a feature service to ArcGIS online using ArcMap 10.1.   When I am signed into ArcGIS online using a subscription account I have no issues publishing the service from ArcMap.  When I sign in using a personal account I don't get the option to select hosted service, I am required to add ArcGIS server details.  I have read through documentation 'about connecting to ArcGIS Server in ArcGIS for Desktop' but when I enter the Server URL and Authentication details I get an unable to connect message.  Would a firewall stop this connection?

Any suggestions?

Publishing from desktop requires using an account that is part of a subscription. There is no ability to publish using a personal account.
