Log in with google?

I am working with a school that rather than creating user names for the student they have the students log in using their google account. Is this the same as SSO? Are they signed in to the org account at that point?

You have to configure this first for the students to be able to use their social network accounts in ArcGIS Online. There is more information here:

"Just logging in with a Google account" is not the same as setting the school Org to engage single sign on with G-Suite. See the help documentation about this: Set up enterprise logins—ArcGIS Online Help | ArcGIS
