Why is there the ability in ArcView to upload layer packages and map packages into an ArcGIS Online account, but not be able to view or share in an ArcGIS Online map?
Presently, you can only use layer and map packages to share data between desktop users. We are currently working on hosting uploaded data so that it can be displayed over the web map. When we do release this feature, it will likely be a premium feature (for a fee).
That would be great. Presently it is difficult ascertain what is possible to share on the various viewers. I think ESRI is being misleading about this, promoting all the sharing that is supposedly possible. This is only true for large organizations which can justify the expense of Server. The smaller guys have to work hard to figure out how to do any basic sharing.
