GPX web application question/enhancement request.

Hi,

I guess this is an enhancement request.

I took a bike ride and captured track and waypoints with Garmin PND. I used Garmin Map Source to edit GPS data and create GPX file. The map source edits were mainly to thin the track points.

I loaded the GPX data into AGOL and did no editing. GPX data has track, trackpoints, and waypoints. I shared the GPX data by loading into a web map, then using the GPX web application:

source GPX data: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36538888/third.gpx

Web map: http://bit.ly/MvDpEI

web application: http://www.arcgis.com/apps/OnePane/gpx/index.html?appid=8b05297f9f7a485c893b47994fff8e77&webmap=fda8...

Obviously, the data could be massaged into a more pleasing form for display. However, as is, in a more or less unedited state a couple things pop out that may be considered as enhancement requests for the web app:

1) When I click on the track a blue box appears in the elevation profile. the reverse does not work. I would like it to work in reverse, so that if i click on the elevation profile, a blue box would appear on the track on the map.

2) a line of text is printed above the elevation profile: "No time info in GPX data." When i click on the map the track popup shows only elevation, not time, so I guess this is a true fact. Leaving aside how this came to be (maybe a quirk in mapsource? maybe an issue reading garmin gpx data?) i have to ask why this message apprears. It seems a bit defensive, as if the software were apologizing for not being able to do something it could do if only it had time info. What that may be i do not know, since this is my sole source of GPX data. what i do know is that this handy web app comes with a message with little informational value to me, and makes the web app seem lacking somehow. The way points are all timestamped, BTW, so somewhere along the line the time info was lost--the hardware was producing it in real time as well.

Other than that it all worked pretty sweet, and if I took the time to tweak the display, the map would look a lot better. I learned the trackpoint layer is necessary to produce the elevation profile.

and one sidebar comment for the GPX mavens out there. On this ride, just for grins, I also tracked it by starting the MotionX GPX app on my iphone. I have to say the Garmin (an old 60sc? I dont think they sell them anymore) was the better choice on the ride because it had a handle bar clip which made waypoint capture easier (and safer!) while riding in a group. the Garmin also runs on AA batteries which were 1/4 used up in a 3 hour ride, while the iPhone was stone dead out of juice after 2 hours of continuous GPS tracking.

thank you for your attention.

Hi funpig,

I wrote and maintain the GPX template. Regarding #1, that's a good enhancement. I'll look at adding that. For #2, you could download and tweak the app to remove that but I understand if that's not practical. I'll look at removing the "No time info in GPX data." text from a future release.
