Changing the label text (name description) for symbols as opposed to colour shape etc

In Map Viewer Classic, when you changed the symbology for a feature (colour, shape, size etc) you could also change the text that went with the symbol. In the new Map Viewer, it's no longer obvious how to do this. If it's like several other changes, there's probably a simple way that just isn't obvious, so if someone to point me to it, I'd be most grateful.

Hi Russ,

Just thought I'd let you know that I solved it; when it was clear that you hadn't done anything I realised that the point label must have disappeared becasue I tried a select by attributes. Although I didn't want that, just the spatial location, I realised that by setting it once that way, when i reset to spatial location only, the label disappeared.

Thanks for looking into this for me. 🙂

You can rename the values by clicking on the text. If you hover over the text you will see the tooltip to rename the value.

That works for features where there is a defined symbolgy, but not for a 'Location only'. Incidentally, I can't see how to change the options, something that was very obvious in the Classic viewer.

That's where I'm trying to change the text, but as you see in Fig1 the only options are to change the style or the attributes, and in Fig 2 all you can change is the colour. I don't get the same options as you do for symbols defined by an attribute.

Does that help?

For simple location you will need to rename the layer

If you are trying to rename the values you need to switch to one that has a list of values like Types

The name is fine, it's the label that I can't get rid of. I'd be happy with the title and just the diamond or triangle, but I can't get rid of the 'Form 3' and 'Survey Point' . They don't appear anywhere that I can see to delete them, unless I'm missing something pretty basic.

I could use ESRI assistant I guess, but I'd have thought I should be able to edit them somewhere in the viewer.

Can you share your web map and app with me and I can take a look. If you cant share publicly you can invite russell_jsapi into a group and share the content to it.
