In ArcGIS Online and Portal allow an administrator to customize the Authoritative tag by adding sub-categories in the Organization Settings.. As an administrator for a statewide Open Data site using Hub having the ability to recognize multiple Authoritative data sources is helpful. 1) Ability to add sub-category if the Authoritative data box is checked in ArcGIS Online/Portal, 2) Define sub-category and add a description that would be included in a page description or metadata.

Examples of Authoritative Sub-Categories:

  • Designated - data formally assigned by a law, policy or governance board to a specific agency or organization for stewardship, maintenance and dissemination. Managed under established standards and update cycles
  • Official - data created, verified and published by a federal, state or local government or organization with statutory or other authority for that domain often fulfilling a legal, regulatory or reporting function.
  • Recognized - data that does not fall under the categories of designated or official by statute or policy but is widely acknowledge and relied upon due to its quality, completeness, and consistency. Applies to data that may have been modified from original data to meet business needs by a department.
