What I would like to have under Settings --> Map & Scene --> Map and Scene Defaults is the option to keep the globally known and understood naming of geographic locations vs. the regional (country) specific naming of a location. By way of example --- if I do not want to see the Gulf of Mexico's new name of Gulf of America, give me the option to use the globally accepted name vs. the silly one that will only last 4-years.

This would allow me do a variety of things....

  • Not have to sigh every time I see it.
  • Not have to sigh again when another governing body or court stops it.
  • Not have to reprint maps when in 4-years time it changes back.
  • Not have to sigh when I have to reprint all the maps again, 4-years after that.

Basically --- I want off this roller coaster of lunacy and just want a check box that lets me use the name accepted by 99.9% of the world.

Changing Labels in Esri Vector Basemaps

ColeWhite

At the time of writing, Google has made changes to its mapping products to reflect the current US administration's wishes - however, I haven't seen this on Esri's basemaps yet.

Rather than introducing new functionality to the tech or alternative basemaps, Esri should simply not publish anything containing the 'Gulf of America' label.
