Extending a feature class line and map freezes

I have multiple lines in a personal GDB that I use for research.  Most times I have several lines right on top of one another or very close to one another, so if lines 1, 2 & 3 lie one on top of the other, and I want to extend only line 1 to reach line 4, I select line 4, select line 1 and use the extend tool.  A window will pop up verifying if I want to extend lines 1, 2 or 3 (even though line 1 is the only one selected), when I choose line 1, the entire map freezes and I have to do a task manager end program.  Is this just a bug or is there something different I should be doing?

Hi Annabelle, I don't think you're quite using the tool correctly. You should only select the line you are extending to {line 4}, and then click the line you want to extend with the extend tool. See the help file here:ArcGIS Help 10.1
