Set attribute field as required?

I would like to set an attribute field as required so users are forced to fill it in before saving.  ArcGIS Mobile does this automatically if a domain is applied but is there a way to do this without applying a domain?

I was able to get around this by applying a range domain to the field I wanted to make required.
