I am running the Mobile Project Center on Windows XP SP3 inside a VMware virtual machine. The refresh/repainting of the user interface is very buggy.

Some parts of the screen are not refreshed correctly. The main menu is nearly not useable because it disappers after I open it and try to move the mouse to a menu item.

See the attached screenshots.

If I switch off the hardware acceleration of the graphic card the referesh seems to work correct.

Hi Brian,

I tried testing this behavior today and I am not able to reproduce any refresh/repaint performance issues in Mobile Project Center when testing with VMware WinXP SP3, ArcGIS Mobile 9.4 Beta 2 configuration. I would like to look into this further for you but need to first gather some additional information.

What video adapter type is used?
Are the latest driver updates installed?
Does the behavior occur with other applications?
What is the Build # for Mobile Project Center (MPC button > About)?
What is your VMware version & Build info (VMware Player > About)?
What is the memory allocation?
Are there messages in the VMware message log?
How many VMs do you have installed to your VM directory?

Thanks,
Denise

Hi Denise,

  • What video adapter type is used? -> NVIDIA geForce 9800GTX on the host. Default VMware VA inside the VM. (see attached image)

  • Are the latest driver updates installed? -> Latest NVIDIA driver on the host. Default drivers for the VMware VA.(see attached image)

  • Does the behavior occur with other applications? -> Only MPC and ArcGIS Mobile

  • What is the Build # for Mobile Project Center (MPC button > About)? -> 9.4.0.0 (2319)

  • What is your VMware version & Build info (VMware Player > About)? -> VMware Workstation 6.5.0 build 118166

  • What is the memory allocation? -> 560 MB of 1.5 GB available

  • there messages in the VMware message log? -> No messages

  • How many VMs do you have installed to your VM directory? -> Don't understand this question. I use VMware workstation.

I have done some addition investigation. As I said before everything works if I turn off the hardware acceleration of the video adapter. But it also works if I reduce the hardwarer acceleration to deactivate all DirectDraw-, DirectX- Cursor- and Drawing accelarations as shown in the attached image.

Please let me know if you need additional information.

I just had a chance to test this issue with the current VMware Player version 3.0.1. With this version everything seems to be OK.
As fas as I know the graphic functions in the new VMware products have been enhanced.
