Esri Maps for Office - Failed to sign in

I have just downloaded Esri Maps for Office, and find I cannot sign-in.  I am trying to sign in to www.arcgis.com, using my D.Nick id that gets me in there OK.  When I try to sign in I get the following error screen.

I am very much a novice to all things ArcGIS - any ideas for solving this?

(I am wanting to use Esri Maps for Office to edit a shape file I have, which ArcGIS Online says is too large to load.  If there's another way of doing that, I am open to ideas)

i am having the same issue and i have an organizational account. even after adding the addresses to my trusted sites the problem remains.
