ESRI Maps Config in Excel 2013

Greetings,

We have ArcGIS Server and a 3rd party application which 'deploys' our mapping services on an internal server.

I downloaded the ESRI Maps for Office and it works okay, and the ArcGIS Connection is set to www.arcgis.com. I can see my spreadsheet data on the ArcGisOnline basemaps, life is good. But I would also like to see our facilities (powerlines) on the basemap too.

I tried configuring the ArcGIS Connection to http://MyServer:6080/arcgis/rest/services/, or a bit further down the tree to individual map services, but I can't seem to get it to work. The problem is after restarting Excel, it prompts me to log in, presumably to ArcGis Online, but the login fails.

I am missing something, but I can't figure out what. Does ESRI Maps use Silverlight to connect to the local server? Do I have to configure an AGOL Portal in order to access local mapping services? I even found a clientaccesspolicy.xml file sample for Silverlight, and tried dumping that into the 'root' but I don't think we're using IIS. I think we're using the API for Javascript, but I'm not sure. I just don't know much about web servers... dang it I'm a mapper Jim!

A little help please?

Thanks, Bill~

Hi Bill -

Esri Maps for Office supports connections to ArcGIS Online and Portal for ArcGIS. Unfortunately we do not support connections to ArcGIS Server. For more information about Portal for ArcGIS, see the help topic What is Portal for ArcGIS?

Thank you Scott,

I've been traveling down this path to ArcGIS Portal already, and it seems to a longer journey than I was originally prepared for. It quickly led me to also using a Web Adapter. At first I thought they were 3rd party downloads, but now I'm thinking they are options to an ArcGIS Server instance.

For the short term, it seems that publishing our content to AGOL is more expedient, even though it's a round trip to SoCal for the data. (I don't see how to mark your response as an answer, but it did indeed, although I'm surprised at the answer!)

I got this resolved after speaking with Keith Krall (ESRI) in Olympia. The local mapping services need to be 'registered' with ArcGIS Online and then those services become available through AGOL.

1) Login and go to MyContent
2) Add Item
3) Change the dropdown from On my Computer to From the Web
4) Paste the URL to your local service
5) Add the Title and Tags and you're ready to roll

Cheers, Bill~
