Save Rather Than Submit?

Is there a way for my field crew to save features without submitting them? (really thinking about if they're in an area with no internet connection (via cell) but gps positioning is just fine.

Yes, it would be ideal if they were to take field maps offline and download the area. But they didn't, and now they can't take the map offline because they can't download the map area.

It would be great if they could just capture the features and submit them later. This would also be useful when they've collected a feature, but it wont let them submit it for some reason. And instead of just abandoning the feature they can save to try again later. (hopefully picking up more features while they wait)

I am looking at pre-planned offline areas, ad-hoc offline areas, and MMP's. Is there anything I should add to that list?

Thanks!

Field Maps does not support 'draft' features. You need to create them against an offline area or online map.

Here is an idea requesting it:

https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-field-maps-ideas/save-a-quot-draft-quot-of-a-smart-form-to-easi...

Field Maps supports all of the below simultaneously:

  • Online Maps
  • Pre-packaged offline maps
  • End users creating their own own offline areas

Following the above workflows would resolve your issue.

In the event that they fail to download the offline areas ahead of time, you could also set them up with a Survey123 form. This supports offline data capture and can point at the same layer you are collecting data in in Field Maps. However, you also need to have them download the form before going offline. There's no way for them to 'magic' data collection if they haven't set something up in FM or S123 before going offline.

Yes, ideally they will know beforehand if they're going into an area with no service.

I wouldn't consider it Magic data collection. They always use the same map, so the collection forms are already on their devices. They were picking up Real gps data. It was the submission that wouldn't work.

But that linked Idea (and the comment with it) is requesting exactly what I was hoping would already have been implemented. Oh well.

Thanks for the suggestion of Survey123. I'll take a closer look at that.
