Mapping a route without the tracker.

I need to map trail alignments in the field and had hoped to use Field Maps, but I cannot find information on how to make that happen. I see that my tracks can be added to the app to track routes, but I need authorization. Without it, is it even possible to map a route in the field without using the Tracker on field maps? Or would I have to just track my route on another app to generate the data then bring the kml data into GIS?
