Created a markup layer in Explorer (17.1.2) on the iPad (iOS 11.2.2)

Shared to arc online

added to an arc online map

opened map in explorer to see the error "The requested field was not found."

Any ideas what is going on here?

Hi Katherine -- There is currently a limitation in Explorer that markup shared and then added to a new map won't render when the new map is opened in Explorer (Markup—Explorer for ArcGIS | ArcGIS ). This should be fixed in the next release, and then markup created in that version of Explorer or future versions won't have this issue.

In the meantime, could you share a bit about what you want to do with the shared markup back in Explorer, and we can see if there is another way to accomplish it?

Hello,

So we have a group of 6 biologist that do investigations on storm drain flow. Unfortunately we have to do multiple investigations (not always the same person) over the course of several years at some locations. We create a markup layer in the field using explorer of the investigation we do that day. Then we share that on arcgis online so that we can all see and have access to the investigations that have been done. It would be nice to see in the field as we go the history of that area instead of doing the research in office first then move to out in the field. The reason we like to use explorer is the fact that it can be an offline app and works better for field work than arcgis online. We always have that backup option it’s just more efficient to use explorer.

It would also be a great improvement to have the ability to share and edit a markup layer that way if something were to happen where we need to transfer the map or we both can take notes on the same investigation markup layer.

We also noticed that the options when in AGO editing markups is different than the feature layers. Very few options and the symbology is very different. Have there been any efforts to create the symbology options in AGO for markups that are the same as the options in explorer?

Thanks for your response. I know these systems are still in their infancy, but they have helped a great amount and we are glad we have the opportunity to share with you the things we would like to see, or things that would help improve our workflow.

Katie.

Thanks for following up Katie. Today, you can share the markup directly with another user of Explorer (through an email, message, or AirDrop) and the recipient can use it in Explorer. Instead of sharing through ArcGIS Online (or perhaps in addition to) you could have workers share their markup directly to another device or other user. If you use an email, you could have someone make sure that message is forwarded to the users who need it before the next round of investigations.

This does also make the markup layer something that can be edited: markup shared in this way works on the recipients' device the same way their own markup layers work. You can't take notes in the same markup layer, as the edits are in your local layer and have to be reshared as a new layer, but I think it might still be useful for you.

I know it isn't ideal, as you have to know who to send it to, but perhaps it would be a way to operate until the next version of Explorer is out and supports sharing markup through ArcGIS Online, adding it to a map, and consuming it in the mobile app.

As for the differences in editing markup in ArcGIS Online and in Explorer, editing markup outside Explorer is something we don't support at this time.
