I am currently enrolled in the beta testing program for ArcGIS Online for Organizations. When attempting to add feature services (both those published by ESRI and those by users) the following error message appears: "The feature service reference is invalid. The feature service could not be added to the map." After emailing an ESRI representative I was directed to following release on the Beta Community:

"Azure - Compute Cloud is experiencing major problems in their North and South Central Sub-Region (and in their European region too). According to their dashboard 28% of their services are affected in the region we are using. Our Publishing service (pub.arcgis.com) and our Hosted Feature Services (services.arcgis.com) seem to be completely offline. Our tasks.arcgis.com and csm.arcgis.com seem to work ok."

And then the following update:

"Microsoft announced that the problems with its Azure cloud were fixed as of last night (2/29). Accordingly, ArcGIS.com and its services should now function as expected."

I assumed this was the issue and it would now be resolved after this update but as on this morning I am still receiving the same error message when attempting to add feature services. I have submitted a bug report within the beta program but I was wondering if anyone on here has encountered this issue and, if so, have any suggestions. Thanks

Hi,
Another possible cause of the issue is if you have turned on security (SSL enabled) your organization. Silverlight on which Explorer Online runs does not allow a mix and match of http and https - it's one or the other.  If you have SSL turned on it means that you are running your organization under https and as such you will not be able to add http services in Explorer Online. The converse situation also applies.

To check your settings login to your account in arcgis.com and then edit settinga > security. See the screenshot
