I am using Build 1200, Vista Home premium 64 bit, ARCGIS 10 Desktop. The ESRI Press textbook GIS 20 Essential Skills has an exercise ( Chapter 19) where you load a previously created LPK into Build 1200. So far this LPK and all others fail with the same Invalid File error. However, the exercise's LPK and all others will open just fine in ArcMap when accessed via Windows Explorer. I have used both the supplied Build 1200 from the book's CD and a fresh download from ESRI. I also tested this condition on my laptop with 32 bit Vista. Same error. I tried Build 1500 but it did not like my PC nor my broadband. This is frustrating.

William,

After opening the layer package in ArcMap can you save the layer file to your disk, and open the layer file in ArcGIS Explorer?   This is not the solution to the problem, just trying to narrow down the cause... is it the package, or the contents of the package... ??

Also, are you using ArcGIS Explorer on the same computer that you have ArcGIS 10 installed on?  This is not a problem, I am just trying to understand the exact setup, so I can ask the right questions, and potentially provide the right solution.

Do you have service pack 1 for ArcGIS 10 installed, or just straight ArcGIS 10?

When you install ArcGIS Explorer 1500, what happens when you try to use it?  In regards to system requirements ArcGIS Explorer 1500 is virtually the same as ArcGIS Explorer 1200.  There may be another cause for the problems you encounter, un-related to hardware.

Mark,
Problem was solved by upgrading the Intel G41 Graphics Chipset via MS Updates. Dell did not have an update that helped. However, after the chipset upgrade Build 1200 would not even load...as it crashed and burned upon startup. So I installed Build 1500 and now all is well with the Lab as I was able to make a slide presentation. As to the platform, I have ArcGIS v10 with SP1 installed locally with Vista Home Premium SP2 as the OS.
