How to merge several rasters into one

I need to combine/merge/mosaic 6 DEMs into one. I’ve tried numerous times now but my output is always one block which covers the space of one of the DEM’s; the entire area the DEM’s span isn’t covered so the mosaicking isn’t working. Do you know why?

I’ve even tried the raster calculator a few times on the individual ones to change the scales first so they’re the same, but I keep getting the result in just one location.

I just want one layer for the DEMs.

What am I doing wrong?  I've tried 'Mosaic to New Raster' but it didn't work. I also tried to create an empty raster dataset and then populate it with all my DEMs. Still only got one block which seems to substitute for one of the DEMs.

Help, please?

Make sure that the output extent is the same as the union of all the rasters: "MAXOF".
