Cannot display ArcGIS layer file with joined symbology table in ArcExplorer

I have a polygon SDE layer with a tab delimited table join to it (in ArcMap) to plot polygon symbology. I saved this simple joined file as a layer file but it will not display in ArcExplorer. The polygon layer will display in ArcExplorer if the table is not attached. Does ArcExplorer not support joined tables in a layer file?
