AGX 2500 Install Observations

I performed a silent "Per User" install on two new/clean Lenovo X230 laptops (Windows 7 SP1, 64-bit) with ArcMap installed and all went as expected except the basemaps did not load on either laptop.

I went to the AGX button in the upper left-hand corner, >ArcGIS Explorer Options >Advanced >Delete All Caches and the basemaps did not install.

I uninstalled and reinstalled AGX 2500 "Per User" and the issue persists.

I uninstalled the "Per User" version and installed the AGX 2500 "Admin" version and the issue persists.

On a second Lenovo laptop with ArcMap installed, the install worked perfectly with basemaps available.  This laptop had AGX 2013beta "Admin" version installed previously.

Q:  Can AGX 2500 "Per User" be installed on a machine that has ArcMap installed?

On a third Lenovo laptop without ArcMap installed and AGX having never been installed, the install went fine, the table-of-contents was empty, but the basemap gallery was populated with options.  A basemap was chosen and appeared in the TOC and in the map frame as expected.

On three other Lenovo laptops that have had AGX 1750 installed previously, installs of 2500 are not showing the empty basemap behavior.  The basemaps gallery appears populated in all these scenarios.

After the install of 2500 and first time opening the map application, the default nmf is not automatically installed at: C:\Users\user\Documents\ArcGIS Explorer.  The user needs to hit the Save button and the "My Default Map.nmf" is automatically pointed at C:\Users\user\Documents\ArcGIS Explorer.

Joe,

What version of ArcMap including service packs (if any) do you have installed on the machines that exhibit the empty basemap gallery?

ArcGIS Explorer desktop 2500 should work in conjunction with with any version of ArcGIS Desktop installed or not installed on the machine.  That said, we may have missed a conflict.

(ArcGIS Explorer desktop 2500 should not be used on a machine that has previous version of ArcGIS Explorer desktop installed, the cache files will clash, ("invalid layer in basemap" message is a sign of this, delete cache and use only one version of explorer to resolve... if you see this message.  Or if for some reason the connection to http://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/services  is broken you will also see this message.)

When you start ArcGIS Explorer you should see an ArcGISConnectionBin.exe start up.  You should see this listed in the task manager processes.  You will also see this in the system tray, and the status should say "Connected to ArcGIS online" or if you are using a portal or signed into an ArcGIS online subscription it will connect to those on start.

I assume that all of these computer are on the same network, since some of the computers work, we can likely rule out a network setting that would be blocking connection.

What is the status of your ArcGIS connection on the computers that do not work?  Is the ArcGISConnectionBin.exe even running?

For the "no default map" issue:
On the machine that does not show a default map on start, if you click "New" on the file menu, do you get a default map?

We did change how the defaultmap and basemap gallery are loaded from previouse releases.  The content is now sourced from ArcGIS online.

So I had this issue as well, and it seems as though the ArcGIS Online service that starts with the start of AGX 2500 (the globe icon in the system tray) may either be set to accept the connection by deafault, or not, and this seems random on every install. I had to go to the system tray, right click on the globe, click "Properties", and then check on the "Enable ArcGIS Connection" setting. This fixed the empty base maps problem for me.

Good morning, Mark.

Thank you for the list of items to check.

Please see the attached PDF document for screen captures.

  • The laptop has ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1, SP1 installed

  • Yes, all laptops are on the same corporate network

  • AGX 2500 "Per User" install

  • Task Manager: ArcGISConnectionBin.exe *32 process is running

  • System Tray: ArcGIS Connection = ArcGIS Not Connected

  • System Tray: ArcGISConnectionBin.exe = ArcGIS Not Connected

Joe,

I have not repro'd this issue yet, but, once I get into the office, I plan to set it up as you have it (to repro), then I am going to apply this patch to ArcGIS 10.1 sp1.   http://support.esri.com/en/downloads/patches-servicepacks/view/productid/160/metaid/1952#bugs

It might resolve the ArcGISConnection issue.

Thanks Mark.  Here's an update.

I uninstalled AGX 2500
Rebooted
Logged in as Admin and installed the PKI/IWA patch for Desktop 10.1, SP1
Rebooted
Reinstalled AGX 2500 'Per User'
Still no Basemaps

Joe,

So far the only way I have been able to reproduce your situation is to disconnect my computer from the internet.

On the computer that fails to load basemaps, are you able to get the information back in a webbrowser using this URL:

http://www.arcgis.com/arcgisuris.xml

The information in this .xml file is what ArcGISConnection uses to determine if there is a connection, an then points ArcGIS Explorer to the appropriate sources for information.

Mark:

I have been doing more testing on many laptops with many users.  My results are attached to this message.

Yes -  I am able to see this site (http://www.arcgis.com/arcgisuris.xml) in a browser.

My feeling is that the issue is somehow related to the user's profile in Windows 7 (64-bit).  For all but one of my test cases, it seems that users who have an established profile on the laptop, the install succeeds and the basemap gallery is populated.  In one case, a "Local" user was created and that new profile, off domain, had a successful install and displayed maps in the basemap gallery.  Otherwise, users with a new profile do not see the items in the basemap gallery and have a failed ArcGIS Connection and ArcGISConnectionBin.exe connection in the notification area of the service tray.

The IT guys cannot think of any recent changes that may have been made to Active Directory or domain settings.
