The layer for the bing base maps appears in the contents window and yet the screen is blank. This is only occurring on one machine.
Internet connection is fine. Opened the application one day to see everylayer in map was broken and then the base map vanished when fixed.
What gives?

I have the same problem.  None of the stock basemaps render when selected.  I get error message "The basemap contains one or more invalid layers."  I uninstalled and reinstalled, checked firewall, nothing works.

Justin,

You could try clearing the cache: click the Explorer button > ArcGIS Explorer Options > Advanced > Delete All Caches.

Do any of the other functions which use ESRI services work? e.g. Find, Directions, etc? If not then it is likely to be a connectivity issue between your PC and the ESRI server. In most cases this is a proxy server or corporate firewall configuration issue.

If it's just the basemaps which are not working - you should also try clearing the cache.

I tried directions, worked fine - a line drew on the blank screen showing a route.  I cleared the cache - still no basemaps of any type.  No matter what basemap I click on, I get message:  "The basemap contains one or more invalid layers."  I am using this on my home pc.

It appears AGX stores session info in the user's windows profile area.  Try clearing out all the AGX related info in the user profile.  I fixed lost symbols and other weird behavior by deleting the profile information.  I figured this out after reinstalling which did not help.

I don't know how to do this.  I could copy my profile but I don't see how I could edit a profile.

Checked all of those things...nothing seemed to help.
The basemaps were still stored in the basemap folder on the machine so I simply copied them to a different folder and re-established a connection and viola!
Still having occasional issues with this one machine having broken layers and not getting updates to LYR files unless unloading and reloading first.
I think it may just be the machine.

I was also having invalid layer issues (http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/4748-The-basemap-contains-one-or-more-invalid-layers.?p=76353&poste...) and had tried literally everything possible. I finally spoke with someone at ESRI and have the solution (at least for me).

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=7f6c0cb4-7a5e-4790-a7cf-9e139e6819c0&dis... and download and install MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 3. That's it!
