Zoom to features - Awful for Data that Crosses International Date Line Extent

Hello,

Unfortunately this isn't new news, Esri software hasn't been great for working with data that spans the international date line extent and this is another example.

I have an EB app set up with a filter and with a request to zoom the map to a filtered data. Easy enough right, well when the features span across the international date line the zoom by default zooms to center the map over Europe. (see screenshots with current Zoom and the preferred Zoom (what I would expect)).

Can this be updated or have an option to modify this zoom for data with this extent? See screenshots below. It is 2022, it seems like we should have better options for working with data that spans the international date line extent. This is such a basic request and hard to explain why this isn't possible currently for folks reviewing the app.

Thanks in advance!,

Kathy

Hello Kathy,

Sorry for the inconvenience that you were experiencing. We have done some enhancements to the map extent sync mechanism in the recent AGOL June release. Are you still seeing the same old behavior? If so, maybe a sample app could help us better locate the issue. Thanks for bringing this up.

Hi TonghuiMing,

Thanks so much for the message and update. I am still seeing the same issue. I could share the app url with you thru a private message if that would be ok since it is still very much in review.

Thanks,

Kathy

I stumbled across your thread while trying to solve this issue myself - did you ever figure out a fix?

Hello @IlanaSchnaufer ,

I wish on a fix but according to Esri this is 'expected' but still awful behavior IMO.

Here is a reply from @TonghuiMing in 2023 who was kind enough to look at the issue closer

Yes, it should be the expected behavior.

First of all, the behavior is from the embedded Dashboards app, so it has nothing to do with Experience Builder -

Second, inside the MV, zoom-to generates the same behavior

This should be the expected behavior of API since the geometry across the international date line might not be valid. If you have any other questions, I suggest posting that to their repo for a follow-up.

Thanks,

Tonghui

I had replied to that response asking why it is expected behavior assuming bad geometry? Basically in our case I had to disable zoom to selected or leave it as is with people then contacting me and asking why it zooms to Europe. I wish I had better news.

Thanks,
Kathy

Bummer, thanks for the update. It's strange because if I select the feature on the map and then click zoom to on the pop up, it frames it correctly, but the filter-zoom takes me to the world centered on Europe. Hopefully someday in the future this will be fixed!
