I am trying to set up ArcGIS for Server 10.1. If I publish a service using the 'copy data to the server' I have no trouble publishing a service. Since the data and the ArcGIS for Server 10.1 software on on the same machine, I do not want to have duplicate copies of my data.  I want to register my folders (containing file geodatabases) in Server.  I cannot seem to make this work!

I have Server connected to one folder that contains several file geodatabases.
This image confirms the connection folder connection in the Server Manager.

When I try to publish a service from ArcMap using data only stored in that connected folder I get a high severity message that the "Layer's data source is not registered with the server and data will be copied to the server.".  If I try to then register the folder in ArcMap I get a "Folder is already registered with the server" message.  I can change the name of the data source at which time I get this error....

Any help registering my folders would be appreciated.
Thanks

Does the arcgis account have access to the folders?

If not, you need to give it access.

Yes, the account has read and write access to the directories.

So the folder is already registered with the server, but it still asks to copy data?  Is the data located on the same server as ArcGIS Server?  Are you using a local or domain ArcGIS Server account?

I am using a local ArcGIS Server account.

Gerry:

You shared the location of your file geodatabases where you added the local ArcGIS Server account to this share?

Also under security for this same folder location, you added the local ArcGIS Server account with full control?

I was faced with the same problem as you and it was resolved once I shared the location and gave the the local ArcGIS Server account full access under sharing (Advanced Sharing) and security.

Gerry,

I see you have the "Same as Publisher folder path" checkbox checked. This refers to the source of the data in the MXD versus the location of the data in the folder you're attempting to register. Are they the same or are you working with two different copies of the data?

I also have had more luck in general using the ArcCatalog wizard instead of the Server Manager interface:

I have been able to successfully register folders using the manager for ArcGIS for Server 10.1.  Thanks to everyone that helped by responding with helpful posts.

I tried to register a new folder today using the same methods and parameters that have worked in the past only today I get a message that the folder is being registered (and the spinning 'please wait bar') but nothing happens.  The spinning bar just spins!

What would prevent me from registering a directory today when I have used the same methods in the past?
