Can SQL Server (non-SDE) tables be published to ArcGIS Server?

All,

What is the best way to publish native spatial and non-spatial tables from SQL server to ArcGIS Server (any version)?

I'm really trying to figure out what part of the Spatial Data Server is now in v10.2, and if we can indeed still publish data from our spatial database ie. SQL Server native spatial tables to ArcGIS server for use in a javascript API application.

Are feature services the method we woul duse to publish this data?

Is a map document still the conduit to publishing this data? (was it with the the SDS?)
