Hello!
I recently switch organizations and I am shifting from analyst/developer into more of an admin role. My organization switched from just ArcGIS Server to Enterprise in 2023, however there is very little in terms of documentation.
Is Server Manager still relevant in 2025? It feels like it should be replaced by the Enterprise Portal and I would like to manage the published data via Portal.
What steps would I need to take to migrate from Server Manager? Any recommended resources?
Thanks!
Here is a good starting place: https://enterprise.arcgis.com/en/portal/11.5/administer/windows/about-using-your-server-with-portal-... (you can update for your version).
Here is also a quick start guide: https://www.esri.com/training/catalog/5cacfe1461a32c31b715f724/arcgis-enterprise-quick-start-guide/
Hope this helps you on your journey......
Thanks George! I think the specific part that I am having trouble with is managing Hosted Services via Server Manager.
My organization has two Map Services and one Feature Service for an important integrated third-party application. However, I do not see the Feature Service listed here. I also do not see any Service Item IDs to identify within the portal but it is connected via Enterprise Portal Data Store item.
Also, the Map Service points to a project file in my data store. \\SERVERNAME\data\Publish\Data.aprx However I am not sure how they are connected.
Any recommendations for tutorials/articles/blogs regarding this?
If you have enterprise why don't you manage managing Hosted Services through Portal home page?
How does your integrated third-party application access the Feature Service (URL, Portal itemID)?
The third-party application is consuming our data from the data store via REST API. There are two applications:
1. First app uses a Map Service to read only and a Feature Service to write back. Live link to some of the datasets in my SQL server.
2. Uses only a Map Service for a third-party hosted app. I believe they access via REST API however they only update their data once a week.
P_W,
There likely is a folder with the hosted service in the Server Manager under the Services tab. The feature service from a third-party is hosted or provided by their server and you will not see it in your Server Manager. You should see it in the web map contents of your client application using the service. Don't worry about this yet though as you need to focus on knowing the components of your Enterprise GIS deployment. I am 90% sure you have a single machine deployment with ArcGIS Server manager, Portal and Datastore all on the same machine. Get to know who in IT is managing your server and what accounts are running your "services" on the server hosting your Enterprise GIS (Portal, ArcGIS Server, Datastore).
Portal is the "easy" user interface for deploying applications, creating web maps, managing services and managing access to published data.
There are many Esri User Conference videos on the Enterprise GIS management. It's not too difficult to get the basics. If you can get the funding or have education credits from Esri to use, definitely take one of the instructor led courses. You should have an Esri Service Rep that can really get you pointed in the right direction.
@HarryPlendl Please see info above. They are consuming the data in my datastore.
We have multiple servers in our deployment. ArcGIS Server, Date Store Server, SQL Server, Portal Server, and Web Adapter Server. The IT folks who established and administered this system have all left.
So I think your last paragraph is exactly the point I am trying to make - Can you point to a single ESRI UC video or ESRI training that covers Server Manager? I cannot find much that is still relevant which leads to my title question - is Server Manager still relevant in 2025?
