Defining Symbols Programatically

I would like to use python to define a large number of custom symbols (several hundred) and save them in my custom style file.  Basically I am trying to avoid manually defining and saving a large number of symbols in the Symbol Editor.  Is this something that is possible?

I need to do this also. Is there code out there to use existing symbol class names (labels) or descriptions? I don't mind adding in the categories for the styles manually.
