I wish that it was explicitly states what group a layer, map , etc is shared with. You have to go into edit group sharing in order to confirm the group and I wish I didn't have to go through all of that for the information.
That letter is the default when a group has no icon. One solution is to go into each group and give them clear, identifiable thumbnails.
I realize that full names may not be practical, because in my organization, some of our groups are division names, and since most of our groups are created by Sites, they also contain the "Content" or "Core Team" tags as well, making an already long group name, longer. As an alternative to just the single letter, which is duplicated multiple times in my groups, how about 2 or 3 letters? Other software applications that use letter icons in as a default either have been or are starting to use multiple letters to help identify groups and/or user.
And yes, adding images does help, but in cases where you have a large organization with dozens of groups, that's not always possible or practical.
Two or three letters, or maybe the first letter from multiple words, those sound easy enough, and would totally help.
