The documentation for ArcGIS 10.2.2 states: "Shared network directories that are hidden or use special characters (for example, $) are not supported by ArcGIS Server"
It is not uncommon among our customers that they use a $-character (dollar character, dollar sign) in file-server paths, where the config-store or server directories are stored. Example: \\fileserver\gis$\arcgisserver\config-store.
I suggest that ArcGIS Server supports the $-sign or even all characters that are not reserved characters as described here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa365247(v=vs.85).aspx#naming_conventions.
