We upgraded one of our users to windows 10, and his ArcMap 10.4.1 crashes every time he locks then unlocks his workstation.  All the rest of us are on windows 7 and don't experience this issue.

Dell T3600

Intel Xeon 3.3 ghz

16 GB Ram

64 bit system

Nvidia Quadro 4000 - 2gb

I will be the first to state the obvious workaround ... save your project and shut down arcmap before locking.

Now there must be reasons that users need to leave a project open and lock there computers, but I can't replicate it as the administrator on a standalone installation of 10.4.1, not connected to any server stuff at all, and McAfee virus scan.

So... is this a standalone installation?

connected to any server for data etc?

virus scan?

limited permissions?

A couple things to test:

  • For the user experiencing the crash, close out of all ArcGIS products.  Rename the Esri folders found under : C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming and in the Registry Editor under: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software. Still crashes?
  • For the user experiencing the crash, have them turn off the lock computer option in the display settings to it's only manual enabled with the CTRL-Alt-Delete key function.  Does ArcMap still crash?
  • Have another user log into the PC, start ArcMap and lock the computer.  Then proceed to unlock the computer.  Does ArcMap crash still?  If no, then it may be related to that user's profile.
  • Does the PC have 2 video cards?  The one you listed and an Intel Video Card?  A tech support incident from 10/14/16 mentions ArcMap crashing that when ArcMap first starts it uses the NVidea Video card.  Then after inactivity, the Intel Driver takes precedence and starts.  Once ArcMap resumes, it searches for the original resources it was using but because it is no longer active, the program crashes.

No this is not a stand alone install, it is concurrent use, and the license manager is on the GIS server.  The Data is also on the GIS SQL server.  The same machine had zero problems in Windows 7.  Our agency requires us to lock the workstation prior to taking breaks.

The User just informed me that it also crashes at times when he is actively using Arcmap.  so it is not only when the workstation is locked.
