Using a Mac to obtain an Apple certificate (.p12 file)?

Can you borrow someone else's Mac? Or does the computer need to be tied to your Apple ID?

Do you still need to pay for a developer account if you are distributing via a landing page instead of the Apple store? If so, what happens when the developer account expires in a year?

Apparently there are ways to get around using a Mac for every step except publishing to the Apple Store. They seemed complicated though, so I saved myself a headache and rented a virtual Mac from http://www.macincloud.com/ . It's $30 for 30 hours and that's plenty of time to do everything you need to do.
