edit layer in a file geodatabase - gdb

This is a newby question - I'm trying to setup editing on a layer in one of my file geodatabases(gdb) on the mapserver.  Can this be done?  I've read that you have to setup a featureservice, but this requires my data to be in a SDE database (i.e. SQL Server, etc...)  Does this mean I have to move my data out of ArcGIS and into something like SQL Server?
