Download layer as shp

Hi,
I want to know if it is possible to download a layer of my projects map as an shp file. We are thinking in adding such capabilities to our development but we are not sure if it is possible.

Hi Anthony,
Thanks for the links, the have been very useful. Still, they all seem to focus in the GP Process. I'm guessing that if I set the NavigateUri to one of my services layer URL I will just get a hyperlink to the layers service directory (ie: http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/ESRI_StreetMap_World_2D/MapServer/0)

Is there any way of getting this layer in shp, geodatabase or other format useful for the end user and compress it in a zip file?
Once I get this working, setting the NavigateUri of the hyperlynk button seems quite straightforward.
