Pass map extent into URL when launching Sample Flex Viewer

We're trying to open the sample flex viewer to the extent that a user has specified in a SQL database app. Our plan is to create a function in FLEX and call that function in the URL with the coordinates. The point at which we're stuck is trying to figure out where in the SFV code we should add this function. Has anyone already done something like this?
