Connecting to SQL Server

Hell..
is there a good sample on how to connect to an external Db such as SQL.. I have read some posting on the ESRI and ADOBE website and I am still little confuse.

You can't connect directly SQL Server in Flex, but you can use a proxy such as HTTPService or WebService written in your server side language of choice.

You can then send requests to this service from your Flex application for your data.
