If I read correctly the relate functionality should work with a MapService as well as a FeatureService? Granted I'm just diving into flex and widgets so that could be problem number 1.
is there an example using a MapService out there because thus far I've only seen examples hitting Feature Service endpoints.
Sure that is why there is a folder in the download called "Example Main Configuration files" Look at the config-relate.xml and notice that the layer type is feature yet the url is connecting to a MapServer and not a FeatureServer.
