News & Updates

Just released into the ArcGIS Living Atlas is the FCC's Broadband Data Collection. This layer pulls in the BDC data from the FCC and makes it available as a ready-to-use service in your maps and analysis. This layer supplements the existing FCC Form 477 dataset in the Living Atlas. Read more about his new layer: https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/arcgis-living-atlas/telecommunications/the-broadband-data-...

This month, a variety of the ArcGIS Solutions  were updated, including two of the telecommunications' solutions. Communications Data Management was updated to version 2.0. Here is a high level overview of the enhancements:

  • Added the Serviceable Locations feature layer to all maps to enable internal management of serviceable locations.
  • Updated the Service Territory layer with additional attributes to improve understanding of service areas.
  • Updated the Lifecycle Status domain to remove duplicate domains values.
  • Updated the Communications Dashboard to include the serviceable locations and service area details as well as added a map.

Communications Utility Network Foundation version 1.4 was also released this month.

  • A new Utility Data Management Support toolbox to support ArcGIS Pro 2.9 and ArcGIS Pro 3.1.
  • Aligned the Structure Model with Electric Utility Network Foundation model.

In a recent update to ArcGIS Online and the new map viewer, it is now possible to upload your own symbols for point layers (yay!). Check out this blog which shows how to create a gauge symbol on your web map: https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/arcgis-online/mapping/creating-dials-and-gauges/

Meetups & Events

The Telecom User Community held two meetups in March. One in-person meetup at the Esri Developer Summit and the second was a virtual meetup. The virtual meetup was the first Telecom GIS in 60 Minutes webinar which focused on ArcGIS Developers and the SDKs and APIs available. Watch the recording of the session below, and we'll see you all at the next meetup!

Telecom Insights

If a telecom’s goals include delivering a quality customer experience, they will need a workforce that can respond quickly to service requests and network issues. Efficiently sharing information from the office to the field and back ensures every employee is making decisions based on the same authoritative information. And since everything in a telecom’s business happens somewhere, ArcGIS, a system built around maps and spatial analysis, is the ideal choice. Check out this Story Map for more information on optimizing your mobile workforce: https://arcg.is/0jjT0X

Also, be sure to watch this month's Talking Telecom with Stacia Canaday and Randall Rene as they discuss ArcGIS as a System of Engagement.

About the Author
As a solutions engineer for the Telecommunications industry at Esri, I am responsible for understanding the technology needs of the telecom market, helping organizations with their geospatial strategy, and ensuring customer success with GIS. Prior to my work at Esri, I was a GIS Analyst with a consulting firm that worked closely with large utility, construction, and engineering firms on utility and telecom construction projects. There, I designed and built an enterprise wide location platform which incorporated server, desktop, web, and mobile components. Email: phuls@esri.com LinkedIn: Patrick Huls X: @SpatialNinja
