I have recently started using mapfolio, could anyone give me some direction on what syntax is required for group ids for a featured group, as I can't seem to get this part working correctly.

You should be able to get the group id from the url of the group.
Example: https://Organization.maps.arcgis.com/home/group.html?id="X"
I have tried both the number and id=number neither work. Do you have success using the group id in mapfolio?
Yes. It should only need the ID in the field, it works. Do you have access permission to the group you're are trying to use?
