Using ArcCatalog's New Terrain Tool vs. ArcToolbox Terrain Tools in Model

I have a problem making a terrain in a model. The results are poor - things are generalized and there apprears to be noise in the terrain. When I make a terrain in ArcCatalog, using the same source data, using the New Terrain tool, the results are good. Why can't I make the same terrain in a model and get good results? I am thinking I have some settings wrong in the model.

Manually, using the New Terrain tool, I set the point spacing to 3 ft, I select Z Tolerance, and I add 7 levels of pyramids: 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000, 25000, 50000 and 100000. With these settings in the New Terrain tool I get a usable terrain. I try to approximate the same settings in my model but I have problems. My model uses the Create Terrain, Add Terrain Pyramid Level, Add Feature Class to Terrain and Build Terrain tools, in that order. I set the Average Point (Create Terrain) to 3. It does not seem to make a difference if I set a Pyramid Type parameter (for ZTolerance). In the Add Terrain Pyramid Level tool, I set the Pyramid Levels Definition values as 0.5 1000, 1 2000, 1 5000, 2 10000, 4 25000 8 50000 16 100000. I think these seetings in the model are an approximation of the settings when I manually make a terrain with the New Terrain tool, but I keep getting poor results with the model.

Could someone suggest things I could try to make a good terrain in my model? I must be missing something. Thanks!
