I am trying to display a TIN using graduated colrs to show different elevations. The TIN displays fine when rendered with all faces as the same symbol. I would like to have it display as Face Elevation with Graduated Color Ramp (Layer Properties->Symbology->Face elevation with graduated color ramp). With this option, the CPU works for 10-15 seconds and then I get a blank screen.
I can export the scene to pdf, and then I see the TIN displayed properly.
A web/forum/discussion group search online has informed me that thsi problem has been reported before (on the good old ESRI forum (http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=93&f=1734&t=147681). And seems to indicate a video card issue. However, a search on the new forum did not bring up any threads on this topic....
Has a solution to this irksome problem ever been presented?I would appreciate any from of help/insight.
I want to show my project managers what 3D Analyst/ ArcScene can do, to convince them of purshasing this extension...and I really want to show them a very intuative 3D scene...
I wanted to update....I installed the extension on a newer pc, and now the TIN is showing up with the graduated colors, accorgind to elevation...So I guess that the graphic/video card was the issue.
I have the exact same problem, although it's not only with big TIN files - it's all of them. We have super computers ($6k each) at work with 1GB video card. So, I doupt (in my case) that it's a computer performance issue.
No words from ESRI on this issue, either. I wish my department would roll back to version 9.2. The version 10, so far, I'm not impressed!

Hello,
Thanks for your post. I am still struggling to get ArcScene to perform properly, and I ma gald to hear that I am not the only one. I have a great video card (brn -spanking new computer) and am still having problems. Tin display with holes, DEM apprea okay on the screen, but do not export to 2D properly, Symbols look good sometimes, but periodically disapear....the list goes on. I am on a 3D analyst trial, with 11 days to go. I am trying ArcGlobe to see if I can get a better visual product from there.
Anyway, just venting...Thanks for your post. It's good to know that I am not alone, yet I sure whish ESRI would address the issue!
I'll add a third voice to this thread. I created a project using a DEM and draped land cover and water features over it three weeks ago without any problems. This week I am using the same type of data in a different location and could not get the water features to drape properly. I created a TIN from the DEM and a multipatch from the water features. They draped over the TIN just fine, but then I started getting the black window. I have reduced the size of the TIN twice, but am still having problems. I cannot get to the properties of anything in the Table of Contents because the window is transparent.
I am also having the same problems with TINs and DEMs files in ArcScene. The TIN displays fine when rendered with all faces as the same symbol, but when I attempt to change the symbology, my screen is blank. When I use the refresh command on the default face symbolization, it also doesn't work. I have to close the .sxd file and re-open it for the figure to regenerate. Not ideal at all.
