I used topografy footprints of buildings to make multipatch features by extrusion. Then I tried to export one building to collada and the export went fine, but when I opened the file in Sketchup 7.1 I got a warning (selected yes to go on) that the model could not be verified and then nothing was imported.
I also tried to replace a model with the one I exported in a previous step and all I got was a garbled building (missing triangles).
Does anyone have any experience with such workflow ie. export from ArcGIS 10 to collada->edit in Sketchup->import to ArcGIS 10?
Importing a sketchup model made entirely in Sketchup works fine though even with textures.
Well, I figured it out on my own. It's due to a localized version of Windows. Export to collada writes the decimal separtor with a comma(!) instead of a point. If I replace commas with dots in the .dae file then textures and all dimensions are perfect when collada model is imported to Sketchup or back to multipatch.
We are experiencing a similar issue with the Multipatch to Collada tool - many of the textures are lost when we import the .dae back into ArcGIS with the Import 3D Files tool. Would you mind sending me your .dae files (both the incorrect .dae, and the .dae you altered). I'd like to compare them against the .dae I'm getting to see if I can pinpoint what is causing the problem.
Thanks for the details (and debugging info), JS. We'll investigate the Export to COLLADA tool in regards to this issue and attempt to get a solution into 10.0 SP1.
I put both .dae files in a zip and attached it here. I just replaced all commas with points and now it imports normally back to multipatch (replace model in ArcScene edit mode) or sketchup.
There is one more annoyance. When you import your .dae model to esri and then export it back to .dae and then import to sketchup, you end up with more faces because some of the triangles are not coplanar anymore...this is most like due to some rounding errors.
I am using ArcGIS 10 and Sketchup 8. Multipatch to Collada was successful but when i imported the .dae file in Sketchup, there's a warning and when i go on it failed. Same with KMZ file.
Hope anyone can help me to figure out what was the problem...

Yes. KMZ exported from ArcGIS 10 is NOT compatible with Sketchup 7, 8. (Works with Google Earth but crashed on import to SketchUp) As a result it's no longer possible to export point and line features into SketchUp. Collada works fine for me. I sometime get error messages, but ignore them and things seem to work. How large is your dataset?
