Cannot offset position of labels on map grid in Layout in ArcGIS Pro 2.0.1

First select the Graticule:

In the properties, you can edit the value for the Offset in Appearance:

And when I change that value:

... the labels will move.

I did notice some strange behavior of the value when I use the up and down buttons of the control, it will take huge leaps in the value and when I specify a small value like 6, it changed to 152,4 and with 12 it changed to 304,8. Weird...

Fantastic thank you! I had tried using that 'Offset in Appearance' option but as you say, the numbers were jumping wildly making the labels disappear altogether. It seems for some reason you have to give the number you want it to change by which does seem a very strange (and non-intuitive) way of doing it. Thanks for solving it

I will tag Kory Kramer who might know more on why the numbers are jumping so strangely.

I've toyed with it some and don't see the "jumping" behavior described. I'm able to use the arrows to adjust the offset, and they stick. I can also type numbers directly and things are working fine.

If you can provide explicit step-by-step instructions that will reproduce this behavior, we take a look, but at this point I can't make it work how you're describing.

Let's say that the image below is where I left yesterday. The labels are a the enlarged distance of the graticule and everything looks OK, although the Offset show a high value 304,8pt.:

When I specify a value of 6 in the Offset box:

and I press Enter, this happens:

The value changes to 152,4pt. Which leads me to believe it applies a value of 25,4 (0,1") to the value entered in the box. OK, not very nice, but it is something that can be handled if you know that this happens, but what is not very nice is when I use the up and down buttons. First the up button:

You can see that labels move away with a great leap and the value changes to 3896,36 pt, which is when we divide it by the magic value 25,4 -> 153,4 which is the value I would have expected to be entered when pressing up with a value of 152,4pt.

You can imagine what happens when the down button is pressed with a value of 3896,36 pt (it will change to 3895,36 as a value entered in the box and multiply by 25,4 and I end up with a value of 98942,144 pt and labels that will have disappeared from the surface of the earth.

It seems to me that Esri could almost have an entire webinar series of showing how to best manage and handle labeling in ArcGIS Pro! Or maybe a full blown MOOC for it as well!

Thanks for the resource. I just mean labeling in general (which is best handled in layout view since that's how we will see 'static' labels when printed, etc.). Basically an exploration on how to go above and beyond when needing to have a little complexity to labels; things like that.

OMG, This is soooo messed up... I did not see this problem when working with small layout sizes such as letter or tabloid. As soon as I put a grid on an Arch D size, I was having very very difficult time adjusting offsets and the length of tics. This is a bug for sure. If ESR had a better way of reporting bugs (Click on a report a bug link, describe the problem, submit) i would have reported it but I could not bother going through the insane process.... This thread confirmed that I was not loosing my mind and that Pro is still very much an Alfa release but also pointed me to a kind of a workaround:

In my case - click on the Grid in the TOC and adjust offset - only once and tab away. Then click on the map frame to deselect the grid on the TOC then come back in and adjust another value - either change the offset again or change the length of the tics. You can only change 1 single value at a time otherwise the grid items will go all crazy or become non-responsive. adjusting 1 property then getting out of the grid properties and clicking on another TOC item then getting back into the grid proerties and repeating this one value at a time is highly annoying but worked for me.

Jakub. The behavior in this thread was referring to ArcGIS Pro 2.0 and from looking through the comments, seems like it was resolved in 2.1. What version of Pro are you running now?

@Kory - it may have been resolved in 2.1 but the bug has been reintroduced in 2.3. I am on 2.3.2. Offset value offsets labels on the north and west differently then east and south. This is especially apparent when east and west labels have a vertical orientation and north and south labels have a horizontal orientation. there is also something wrong with the offset value text box - it must loose focus to accept a new value otherwise the value entered offsets labels to incorrect value. The only workaround that works is to have 2 grids; 1 with north and west labels the other with east and south labels.

This is marked as ANSWERED but I disagree as the problem of not being able to correctly offset labels on a grid is still present in version 2.3.2. The current workaround is to have 2 of the same grids and offset north and west labels to a different value then east and south labels provided you are aware you must force focus away from the offset text box every time you change and apply value as there appears to be an issue with that as well.

Hi Jakub,

I'm unable to reproduce the grid label offset issue you have identified using version 2.3.2. As illustrated in the screenshot below, label offsets for both graticules and measured grids are working as expected for all cardinal directions. This layout is on an ANSI D sized page.

It is possible that there may still be a bug, but we need to be able to reproduce it in order to diagnose and fix the issue.

The Offset control is also working as expected. After entering a value into this control you NEED to commit the change. This can be done by pressing Enter if you wish the focus to remain with the control. We have seen issues with panes, such as the Format Map Grid, losing focus after a property change is committed. We working to address this problem with 2.4.
