Symbology only gets updated on the Map, not on the Feature Service

Greetings everyone.

So I have the following problem: I set a Feature Service in my ArcGIS Online account. I tried to change the symbology of a sublayer in the Map Viewer and set an Arcade expression (as seen in next pic).

I then saved the sublayer (I expected) to save the new symbology on the Feature Service,

To my surprise, after I tried to open the sublayer of the Feature Service in the Map Viewer, I still saw the old symbology.

I really don't know how to effectively change the sublayer's symbology of a Feature Service. When I try to add the Feature Service to a new map, indeed the symbology has changed but the sublayer in the Feature Service itself, still has the old symbology!

The Map Viewer in app and vis tab will not write back to the feature service and only use the item. You could update the feature service definition to use the new arcade editor if you are familiar with that process.

Changing the symbology in the map and saving it only save symbology for that map.

If yo want to change the default symbology (the symbology when you add to new map viewer), you go to the item details page, visualization, set symbology and Save (in upper left).

Save web map - saves to the web map

Save Layer - saves to the feature layer item if one exists or creates a new one if one doesnt exist.

Map Viewer does not push these changes back to the feature service endpoint

There is a problem with this solution - when I try to edit the symbology with an Arcade expression, I got the following error.

Previously I switched to the Map Viewer Classic as a workaround (that some people suggested in the past), but in this case I can't!

Anything I can do in this context?

Is this an empty feature layer? If so we have a fix coming that planned for the next release for that. You could add a temporary feature to get around that.

I did as you said and edit the symbology in the Feature Service sublayer Visualization tab

I tried to create a feature as you suggested.

It is quite strange because when I try to open the Feature Service, the symbology is definitely updated as you can see here

But when I try to open the sublayer, it still has the old symbology.

This is critical for me because I intend to use the Feature Service in an app I'm currently developing for Android using ArcGIS's SDK. In case I can't in this way, the only alternative I know is to use the ArcGIS Pro software to publish a new Feature Service (but I would love to avoid the hurdle of setting a new Feature Service 😊)
