Failed to open map view

Hello everyone,

I have been working for 15 days on an important project. Every step/process that I was working on I saved it. When I open ArcGIS Pro (version 2.8) I found this message.

Please, could you help me in fixing this issue as soon as possible?

I've run into this problem a few times and it looks like others still are as well, so I wanted to offer my stop gap solution that I use. I just open a new blank map within the project and add in all my files/feature classes again from the catalog. It doesn't save your formatting/symbology but usually all of the geoprocessing tools' outputs are saved as files to the project. Not a perfect solution, but something at least.

Hi, the best course of action is to contact Esri Technical Support if you haven't done so already. This is probably something that needs troubleshooting.

Meanwhile, could you try the following options?

1. Close all applications. Restart your system.

2. Try opening the APRX file from a fresh ArcGIS Pro instance? Project > Open. Also

3. Save As the project to a new location, and try opening the newly saved file.

4. Share as Project Package. Then extract the package .

hello! today the exact same thing happened to me.. did you find any solution? i casually saved the project in school but later this day i tried to open the same project at home and "failed to open map view" ...

Found a solution! If you copy and paste the map that fails to open, the new copy will work.

Hi There!

Did anyone find any work around for this issue. It became so annoying for me now as it's been happened 3 times since this morning and I had to created a new map every time.

Please mention here if anyone find any possible solution of this problem, "Failed to open map view" .

I have the same issue. I created a new map and saved the file thinking only the map was corrupt... But then the "map failed to load" happened on my new file..

We are also having this issue with more than one map, but mainly for one user. It has happened on maps created in previous versions of ArcPro and on new maps created with the current version (3.1.2 for us). The latest map had a lot of files from different source folders, including gdb rasters, feature classes, tifs, and a shapefile. We could see all the sources by going to the map item properties and choosing to update data sources. We did not update anything, just used that as reference for what layers to reload in the map. We will be calling Esri Support but also looking for updates on this forum. thanks!

Solidarity with you all! With this being such a serious issue, I'm surprised/disappointed that Esri has not chimed in. Maps should not spontaneously become corrupt.

I've had this issue with maps in several different projects, and it's usually just one map in the project that has the issue while the others open as normal. I have not found a way to recover any of the corrupted maps.

I tried the copy/paste suggestion, but "paste" is grayed out.

I tried restarting my computer, and tried opening the project on a different computer. Neither option was successful.

I've had this problem repeatedly for the last month. I have updated to 3.1.3. I will work on a project, close it, and when I try to re-open it, I get the "Failed to open map view" error. I have made sure my projects are local with no long or weird path names.

This is the same experience I am seeing with 3.1.1. I'm unable to open the map or copy/paste the map but I CAN see the layers and data sources through that Catalog view. The map had SDE, PNG, and FGDB connections. I tested keeping the SDE connection but changing the PNG and FGDB connection to map to a local C drive instead of a network drive location. The update to the data sources did work but the map still fails to open.

I also tested exporting the project as a package but that fails as well with no useful or descriptive error message.

I'm curious what ESRI Support stated during your conversations

Same issue here for a couple of weeks. I've found that a map project will save and open without issue in 3.1.2, until I use the Reclassify tool in the Spatial Analyst Toolbox. Once I've run that, I get the "Failed to open map view" error if I save and reopen the project. This error persists across many users at our organisation.

Sorry that you are experiencing a problem. It sounds like you are all getting this failure to open map after running the Spatial Analyst Reclassify tool. Could you please send me (kkramer@esri.com) your .aprx files and indicate which map fails to open? We will have the team take a look to see if we find any commonalities between the project files which might help us understand the issue.

For others on the thread, we are interested in investigating your .aprx files as well. If you are experiencing this issue, please contact technical support

This way you'll be able to share your .aprx files with any relevant details that you might have such as whether Pro may have closed unexpectedly, or disconnected from a network location where the project is saved, when working with that project. It will be necessary to understand where these projects are saved as well so we can look for commonalities - folder on a network, cloud store such as OneDrive, and so on. All of this information should be included when submitting an .aprx file to technical support.

Ours had nothing to do with reclassify, but I will contact tech support and send them one of our APRX files with corrupt maps. Thank you for replying.

For more context, we work off of a local server in our company's office. It seems like the "map failed to open" errors usually occur after some time has passed. We reuse maps/layouts in reports from year to year, and often need to go back and update an APRX that hasn't been opened in 12 months.

my project also does NOT use reclassify so it's unrelated to that. For the failed map in question, it was the first time I had used a masking layer on aerial imagery. I'll try to send a project file to tech support.

I have experienced the reclassify > can't open map bug on Oct 31. I was doing a textbook exercise (Getting to Know ArcGis, etc. by Law and Collins) using ArcGIS Pro 3.1.3 that had me use the Reclassify (Spatial Analyst) tool. I accidentally closed that map and could not reopen it. Will send the .aprx file to the email address above.

I am currently experiencing the same problem. I used the Reclassify tool extensively and got signed out of my ArcGIS Pro account. Afterwards, I encountered the error only on the active map document that I was working on earlier.
I think the problem might be Reclassify-related.

I wanted to follow up on this thread to share some information that may be helpful.

Firstly, thank you to those of you who have shared your projects which has allowed us to investigate the issue. It is important to note that of the .aprx files that we have looked at, the problem is not always the same. However, many of the projects do point to an issue that we believe has been addressed in ArcGIS Pro 3.2. This change has also been included in ArcGIS Pro 3.1 Patch 4 (3.1.4) that is scheduled to be available tomorrow (November 16).

So the best thing to do is to update to ArcGIS Pro 3.2 if possible. If you need to stay on ArcGIS Pro 3.1, update to patch 4 (3.1.4) when it is available.

While the fix in 3.2/3.1.4 cannot repair existing projects, it should prevent the problem from occurring in the future – again, for the most prevalent issue we’ve observed, and reiterating that not all manifestations of this error have the same underlying cause.

It is also worth noting that storing an .aprx file in a location that is automatically syncing with OneDrive can cause problems. Please review https://support.esri.com/en-us/knowledge-base/problem-arcgis-pro-and-cloud-storage-services-000025605

While this is not supported, the article does contain some suggestions:

If combining ArcGIS Pro and OneDrive is unavoidable:

Zip the file geodatabase folders before uploading to the cloud storage platform.
Don’t allow multiple users access to files or simultaneous editing of files. This prevents multiple copies of the same file from being created and avoids confusion around whose edits are applied.
Turn off OneDrive syncing while working in ArcGIS Pro. For example, turn off syncing during the day and use ArcGIS Pro during the day only. Any confusion about which file was updated last is avoided.
When frequently accessing a folder, have OneDrive always make the folder available locally on your computer. This prevents delays and errors when accessing files that are only available online at the time they are accessed.
Don’t access files or perform actions that generate related .lock filetypes through ArcGIS Pro (for example, editing a feature class). This can create sync errors, and if multiple machines are synchronized, lock files are downloaded to each of them.
Access files in OneDrive directly from the location where they are synced to the local computer. For example, drag and drop the files onto ArcGIS Pro from File Explorer. Do not access and open the files from a web browser.

I had the issue described above and I could not recover the map I was working on.

Following your guidelines, I updated the ArcGIS version to 3.2. However, the same problem appeared the second time within one week! My project fails to open the map view.

The issue might be connected to the tool Reclassify. I used it a few times and didn't close the project after that, which means I still can operate on the map. However, the map is not displayed on a PNG file after exporting it as a layout.

It is so frustrating since I have to reload all feature layers and redo the symbology again.

I have this same problem too. Noticed first Arc Gis Pro 3 did not deliver the layout images through export. I closed the program, opened it again: the error message saying could not open Map view...

I don't understand how this can happen? I was saving all he time and saved before closing.

Same issue here, using 3.2.1. I was working in a .aprx yesterday where I ran Reclassify a few times. I had divided my work into two maps and I can open only one of the two today (the map I cannot open is where the Reclassify inputs and outputs were for geoprocessing). I've definitely noticed a lot of issues with Reclassify over the past year where .aprx would fail to open or cause ArcGIS Pro to close abruptly during geoprocessing. I've also noticed consistent glitches during geoprocessing, for example when I classify integer data the quantile breaks will be decimal values (especially if I re-open geoprocessing from previous run history), but then if I run the tool again it will return to integer breaks. I've tried moving Reclassify outside of my working .aprx and to it's own .aprx (I've had these fail to open at times, but at least then I didn't lose the rest of my map contents and formatting). As inconvenient as it is, I think I will continue to move that geoprocessing workflow to a separate location until I have more confidence in the tool.

I've also been having this issue. No reclassify tool used. Was running into really long export times, then Pro crashed while working on a layout. When I re-opened the project I got the failed to open map view message. I open and work in this project every day. Very frustrating to have it just stop working without explanation.

Same Issue here.

I am running in Arc Pro 3.2.0. The file is a few years old and I last used the reclassify tool about 8 months ago (last use was in Arc Pro 3.1.0 (I think). I needed to go back in and create a few new geotiff files today using the reclassify tool again and got the same error (Failed to open map view) as all the other users in this forum.

The stop gap solution another person mentioned really isn't sufficient with maps that contain large amounts of layers/shapefiles/rasters etc.

ESRI, can you please put some more effort into resolving this issue? It appears the update has not resolved everyone's issues still.
